Physicochemical and functional properties of short-chain fatty acid starch modified with different acyl groups and levels of modification

Rice and quinoa starches are modified with short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) with different SCFA acyl chain lengths and levels of modification. This work is aimed to investigate the impact of modifying rice and quinoa starches with short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) on various physicochemical properties, including particle size, protein and amylose content, thermal behavior, pasting characteristics, and in vitro digestibility. Both native and SCFA-starches showed comparable particle sizes, with rice starches ranging from 1.58 to 2.22 μm and quinoa starches from 5.18 to 5.72 μm. SCFA modification led to lower protein content in both rice (0.218–0.255 %) and quinoa starches (0.537–0.619 %) compared to their native counterparts. Esterification led to the reduction of gelatinization and pasting temperatures as well as the hardness of the paste of SCFA-starches were reduced while paste clarity increased. The highest level of modification in SCFA-starch was associated with the highest amount of resistant starch fraction. Principal component analysis revealed that modification levels exerted a greater influence on starch properties than the types of SCFA used (acetyl, propionyl, and butyryl). These findings is importance in considering the degree of substitution or level of modification when tailoring starch properties through SCFA modification, with implications for various applications in food applications.

Nephro-protective effects of alpha-lipoic acid in type I diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an insulin-dependent autoimmune condition. Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are volatile fatty acids with 1-6 carbon atoms that influence glucose storage in the body and can reduce appetite, potentially decreasing T1D risk. Alpha-lipoic acid (α-LA), a type of SCFA, has previously been used to treat diabetic neuropathy and inflammation due to its antioxidant properties. This study aims to assess α-LA's protective effects against T1D and associated kidney damage in rats induced with streptozotocin. Diabetic rats were treated with α-LA orally for 15 days, resulting in improved blood glucose (56% decrease) and kidney function markers like blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and uric acid. α-LA also showed significant antioxidant effects by decreasing LPO as well as improving activities of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione-S transferase and alleviated kidney damage caused by diabetes. Docking experiments suggest that α-LA may regulate diabetes-related changes at the epigenetic level through interactions with the SIRT1 protein, indicating its potential as a target for future antidiabetic drug development.

Revisiting the Role of Valeric Acid in Manipulating Ulcerative Colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by a complicated interaction between mucosal inflammation, epithelial dysfunction, abnormal activation of innate immune responses, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. Though valeric acid (VA), one type of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), has been identified in other inflammatory disorders and cancer development, the pathological role of VA and underlying mechanism of VA in UC remain under further investigation. Studies of human clinical specimens and experimental colitis models were conducted to confirm the pathological manifestations of the level of SCFAs from human fecal samples and murine colonic homogenates. Valeric acid-intervened murine colitis and a macrophage adoptive transfer were applied to identify the underlying mechanisms. In line with gut microbiota dysfunction in UC, alteration of SCFAs from gut microbes were identified in human UC patients and dextran sodium sulfate -induced murine colitis models. Notably, VA was consistently negatively related to the disease severity of UC, the population of monocytes, and the level of interluekin-6. Moreover, VA treatment showed direct suppressive effects on lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-activated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and murine macrophages in the dependent manner of upregulation of GPR41 and GPR43. Therapeutically, replenishment of VA or adoptive transfer with VA-modulated macrophages showed resistance to dextran sodium sulfate-driven murine colitis though modulating the production of inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6. In summary, the research uncovered the pathological role of VA in modulating the activation of macrophages in UC and suggested that VA might be a potential effective agent for UC patients.

Butyrate alleviates renal fibrosis in CKD by regulating NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis via the STING/NF-κB/p65 pathway

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious and irreversible disease primarily characterized by chronic inflammation and renal fibrosis. Recent studies have suggested that gut microbiota-related metabolites, particularly short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are significantly associated with kidney diseases. Notably, butyrate, a type of SCFAs, plays a crucial role in this correlation. However, the effect of butyrate on renal fibrosis in patients with CKD and its potential mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that butyrate levels are reduced as CKD progresses using a CKD C57BL/6 mouse model established by a 0.2% adenine diet. Exogenous supplementation of butyrate effectively alleviated renal fibrosis and repressed the levels of proteins associated with NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis (NLRP3, IL-1β, caspase-1, and GSDMD). Additionally, we conducted an in vitro experiment using HK-2 cells, which also confirmed that the elevated levels of NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis proteins in TGF-β1-stimulated HK-2 cells are reversed by butyrate intervention. Further, butyrate mitigated the activity of the STING/NF-κB/p65 pathway, and STING overexpression impaired the protective function of butyrate in CKD. Hence, we suggest that butyrate may have a renoprotective role in CKD, alleviating renal fibrosis possibly by regulating NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis via the STING/NF-κB/p65 pathway.

The Diagnostic Potential of Gut Microbiota-Derived Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a complex pregnancy-related hypertensive disorder leading to multiorgan dysfunction. It has high maternal, fetal, and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates. The study of gut microbiota and its metabolites in PE deserves further exploration. Thirty-eight pregnant women with PE and 29 healthy pregnant women in the third trimester of their pregnancy were recruited in this study. We used a targeted metabolomics approach to evaluate the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in serum samples. The correlation between SCFAs and clinical characteristics was also explored. The results of mass spectrometry (MS) showed significant differences at the metabolomics level of SCFAs between the PE and healthy control. The metabolic levels of acetate, propionate, isobutyrate, and valerate were significantly increased in the PE group than in the healthy control group. In contrast, caproic acid and butyrate levels were significantly reduced. The correlation analysis showed that urea, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure levels were positively correlated with four types of SCFAs (acetic acid, propionic acid, isobutyric acid, and valeric acid) which increased in the PE group. Furthermore, the neutrophil percentage and the fetal birth weight were negatively correlated with isobutyric acid and valeric acid. In addition, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis using a generalized linear model showed that multiple SCFAs would be potential diagnostic markers for PE, with high specificity, sensitivity, and area under the curve (AUC). Among them, isobutyric acid (sensitivity: 97.4%, specificity: 100%, AUC = 1.00), propionic acid (sensitivity: 86.8%, specificity: 93.3%, AUC = 0.954) and acetic acid (sensitivity: 86.8%, specificity: 83.3%, AUC = 0.891) depicted significantly higher diagnostic value and potential clinical applications. In summary, the results of this study indicate that SCFAs have the potential to become effective biomarkers for early screening of PE.

Intracerebroventricular Delivery of Gut-derived Microbial Metabolites in Freely Moving Mice.

The impact of gut microbiota and their metabolites on host physiology and behavior has been extensively investigated in this decade. Numerous studies have revealed that gut microbiota-derived metabolites modulate brain-mediated physiological functions through intricate gut-brain pathways in the host. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are the major bacteria-derived metabolites produced during dietary fiber fermentation by the gut microbiome. Secreted SCFAs from the gut can act at multiple sites in the periphery, affecting the immune, endocrine, and neural responses due to the vast distribution of SCFAs receptors. Therefore, it is challenging to differentiate the central and peripheral effects of SCFAs through oral and intraperitoneal administration of SCFAs. This paper presents a video-based method to interrogate the functional role of SCFAs in the brain via a guide cannula in freely moving mice. The amount and type of SCFAs in the brain can be adjusted by controlling the infusion volume and rate. This method can provide scientists with a way to appreciate the role of gut-derived metabolites in the brain.

Alterations of gut microbiota-derived metabolites in gestational diabetes mellitus and clinical significance.

BackgroundThe change in the characteristics of the gut microbiota is linked to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, whether and how the gut microbiota‐derived metabolites change in GDM is uncertain. Here, we aimed to determine associations between the gut microbiota‐derived metabolites and GDM.MethodsUsing targeted metabolomics approaches, 7 types of short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs), 38 types of bile acids (BAs), and 5 types of trimethylamine N‐oxide (TMAO), and its derivatives of serum samples were obtained from pregnant women with GDM (n = 24), and healthy pregnant controls (HC, n = 28) were detected to identify the metabolic signature of GDM to investigate the potential biomarkers. Moreover, we assessed the associations between gut microbiota‐derived metabolites and clinical parameters.ResultsIn our study, the gut microbiota‐derived metabolites signatures were significantly different between GDM and HC. Quantitative results showed the levels of isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, valeric acid, caproic acid, GUDCA, THDCA + TUDCA, and LCA‐3S were significantly higher in GDM, but the level of TMAO and its derivatives did not change significantly. Some altered gut microbiota‐derived metabolites were significantly correlated with glucose and lipid levels. Receiver‐operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of generalized linear models showed that gut microbiota‐derived metabolites may be potential biomarkers of GDM.ConclusionThis study highlights gut microbiota‐derived metabolites alterations in GDM and correlation of the clinical indicators, which provides a new direction for future studies aiming to novel serum biomarker for early detection or target of drug therapy of GDM.

Gut microbiota-derived short chain fatty acids are potential mediators in gut inflammation.

Gut inflammation is a challenging concern in humans and animals, which disturbs normal growth and leads to severe bowel diseases. Short chain fatty acids (SCFA) are the gut microbiota metabolites produced from fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates, and have been reported to modulate gut inflammation. SCFA have been implicated as the potential therapeutic bioactive molecules for gut inflammatory diseases, and could be an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters (AGP). In this review, the existing knowledge about the types of SCFA, the related gut microbes producing SCFA, the roles of SCFA in maintaining gut homeostasis, and how SCFA modulate gut inflammation is summarized. The therapeutic application of SCFA in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is also highlighted.

Effects of Different Concentrations of Ganpu Tea on Fecal Microbiota and Short Chain Fatty Acids in Mice.

Ganpu tea is composed of tangerine peel and Pu-erh tea. Current research suggests that both products can interact with gut microbes and thus affect health. However, as a kind of compound health food, little information is available about the effect of Ganpu tea on intestinal microorganisms. In this study, the basic physiological parameters (body weight, white adipose tissue and serum fat), the regulation of intestinal microorganisms and content of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in feces of healthy mice were studied. The Ganpu tea can reduce the weight gain of mice and the increase in white adipose tissue (p < 0.01). After the intake of Ganpu tea, the abundance of Bacteroidetes increased (p < 0.05), whereas that of Firmicutes decreased (p < 0.01), indicating the latent capacity of Ganpu tea in adjusting the gut microbiota. Moreover, Ganpu tea differentially affected the content of different types of SCFAs in feces. Ganpu tea at the lowest concentrations showed positive effects on the concentrations of SCFAs such as acetic acid and propionic acid, whereas the concentration of butyric acid was decreased. For branched short-chain fatty acids (BSCFAs) such as isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, etc., Ganpu tea reduced their concentrations. Our results indicated that Ganpu tea may have positive effects on preventing obesity in humans, but further research is needed before introducing such dietary therapy.

Cefazolin Improves Anesthesia and Surgery-Induced Cognitive Impairments by Modulating Blood-Brain Barrier Function, Gut Bacteria and Short Chain Fatty Acids.

Emerging evidence suggests that anesthesia and surgery may induce gut dysbiosis. Gut dysbiosis leads to imbalance in circulating contents of microbiota-derived metabolites and disrupts the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), contributing to postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). The composition of gut microbiota may be influenced by various antibiotics. However, how perioperative use of antibiotics affects POCD needs more explorations. In the present study, we explored the effect of cefazolin, a common antibiotic used in perioperative period, on cognitive function, BBB integrity, gut bacteria and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), a group of widely studied metabolites in aged mice, using 18-month-old male mice. Significant BBB disruptions and decreased levels of tight junction proteins, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and Occludin (OCLN) were seen in the mice of POCD model. Cefazolin treatment attenuated these changes induced by anesthesia and surgery. Furthermore, cefazolin reversed the changes in several fecal bacteria (β-, γ/δ-, ε-Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes) as determined by qPCR tests. Analysis of plasma SCFAs showed that almost all types of SCFAs were reduced in POCD and cefazolin administration reversed the changes in expression of the two most abundant SCFAs (acetic and propionic acids). In conclusion, this study demonstrated that cefazolin improved POCD. Mechanistically, cefazolin suppressed the disruption of BBB, gut microbiota or SCFAs, thereby ameliorating POCD.

Prebiotics in vitro digestion by gut microbes, products’ chemistry, and clinical relevance

Several investigations have elucidated the chemistry of prebiotics based on their fermentation by the colonic microbes, which release metabolites that are often implicated in host's gut and whole body health. The present study aims at providing a preview of prebiotics and their interactions with the colonic microbiota for a slow fermentation in vitro. The metabolites produced, mainly short chain fatty acids (SCFA), their chemistry, interactions with prebiotic structural mechanisms, and beneficial impacts on the host were also reported. The present review further considers the clinical relevance of the SCFAs produced. It was deduced that the physicochemical properties of prebiotics would influence their colonic fermentation rate, microbial choice, and growth as well as SCFA type and ratios. This will in turn be of utmost clinical significance. The relationship between oral-origin bacteria in the fecal microbiome and albumin-bilirubin grade in patients with hepatitis C.

Bacteria of oral origin (BO) in the gut are associated with prognosis in patients with cirrhosis. The Greengenes database (gg_13_8) is widely used in microbiome analysis, but the expanded Human Oral Microbiome Database (eHOMD), a specialized database for BO, can add more detailed information. We used each database to evaluate the relationship between the albumin-bilirubin grade (ALBI) and the microbiome in patients with hepatitis C. Eighty patients were classified into the low ALBI group (LA; n=34) or high ALBI group (HA; n=46). Isolated DNA from stool was amplified to target the V3-4 regions of 16S rRNA. The microbiomes of the two groups were compared using gg_13_8 or eHOMD. We evaluated the associations between microbiomes and prognoses using Cox proportional hazards models. At the genus level, the two groups differed significantly regarding 6 (gg_13_8) and 7 (eHOMD) types of bacteria. All types except Akkermansia are classified as BO. Both databases showed an increase in Streptococcus and Veillonella. eHOMD showed a decrease in Fusobacterium and an increase in Fretibacterium; both produce various types of short-chain fatty acids. At the species level, the two groups demonstrated significant differences in 2 (gg_13_8) and 6 (eHOMD) bacterial types. Selenomonas noxia and Streptococcus salivarius were related to poor prognosis in univariate analysis. The HA group demonstrated increased BO, most of which produce lactic acid or acetic acid. The correlation between the microbiome and metabolism might be related to prognosis. eHOMD was a useful database for analyzing BO.

Analysis of Gut Microbiome and Metabolite Characteristics in Patients with Slow Transit Constipation.

Slow transit constipation (STC) is a type of functional constipation in which colon transit time is extended as a result of a reduction in the high amplitude of colon contraction activity. The utility of gut microbiome and metabolite characteristics in patients with STC is rarely studied. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) enhance colonic fluid and sodium absorption and thus may aggravate the symptoms of STC. However, the content and role of SCFAs in constipation patients are not clear. We speculate that gut microbiome and SCFAs in the colon of STC patients may be abnormal and linked to the underlying mechanism of STC. This observational study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02984969). The high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the diversity and composition of fecal microbial communities. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to determine the properties and concentrations of the SCFAs in the two groups. The Shannon diversity and Simpson diversity of the gut microbiome were significantly greater in the STC group than the control group. The two groups also showed significant differences in the species composition of the gut microbiome at different classification levels. The results of GC-MS showed that the acetate concentrations in the STC group were significantly reduced compared with the control group, but the other five types of SCFAs and total SCFAs showed no significant difference between groups. ROC curve analyses revealed that the AUC of Acetate (AUC = 0.758) was higher than Propionate (AUC = 0.660). The largest AUC of gut microbiome for predicting STC was Prevotella (AUC = 0.807). Correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between the concentration of Ruminococcus and Disease history (rs = 0.519). Meanwhile, a positive correlation between the concentration of Roseburia and Acetate (rs = 0.606) or Butyrate (rs = 0.543) was found. We found significant differences between the STC and control groups in the main components of the gut microbiome, with greater diversity in the STC group and differences between the groups in species composition at different classification levels. These different microbiome and metabolite may be valuable biomarkers for STC.

TiO2 nanoparticles accelerate methanogenesis in mangrove wetlands sediment

In this study, the response of methane (CH4) production to the addition of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) with three types of short-chain fatty acids (sodium acetate, sodium propionate and sodium butyrate) as carbon sources in mangrove sediment was investigated. The results showed that the maximum CH4 formation rate increased by 45.2%, 32.7% and 48.6% and the maximum cumulative CH4 production increased by 25.2%, 7.7% and 6.3% with the addition of TiO2 NPs in the sodium acetate, sodium propionate and sodium butyrate systems, respectively. The microbial community analysis revealed that the electrogenic bacteria Proteiniclasticum and Pseudomonas, butyrate oxidizing bacteria Syntrophomonas and methanogens Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina were significantly enriched in the presence of TiO2 NPs, indicating that TiO2 NPs can enhance CH4 production by stimulating the growth of different species of methanogens and butyrate oxidizing bacteria. The enlarged distance between microbes, the enhanced conductivity of the sediment and the typical microorganisms for direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) with the addition of TiO2 NPs suggest that the promoted DIET between distinct microorganisms could be another possible explanation for the improvement in CH4 production. It can be speculated that a weaker effect on methanogenesis increases under the natural concentration of TiO2 NPs compared with the experimental conditions; however, the amounts of TiO2 NPs are increasing enriched in wetland environments. Therefore, the findings of this study increase current knowledge about the effect of nanomaterials on global CH4 emissions and suggest that the discharge of wastewater containing TiO2 NPs from the synthesis and incorporation of TiO2 NPs in customer products needs to be monitored.

From molecular promise to preclinical results: HDAC inhibitors in the race for healthy aging drugs.

Reversing or slowing the aging process brings great promise to treat or prevent age‐related disease, and targeting the hallmarks of aging is a strategy to achieve this. Epigenetics affects several if not all of the hallmarks of aging and has therefore emerged as a central target for intervention. One component of epigenetic regulation involves histone deacetylases (HDAC), which include the “classical” histone deacetylases (of class I, II, and IV) and sirtuin deacetylases (of class III). While targeting sirtuins for healthy aging has been extensively reviewed elsewhere, this review focuses on pharmacologically inhibiting the classical HDACs to promote health and longevity. We describe the theories of how classical HDAC inhibitors may operate to increase lifespan, supported by studies in model organisms. Furthermore, we explore potential mechanisms of how HDAC inhibitors may have such a strong grasp on health and longevity, summarizing their links to other hallmarks of aging. Finally, we show the wide range of age‐related preclinical disease models, ranging from neurodegeneration to heart disease, diabetes to sarcopenia, which show improvement upon HDAC inhibition.

Artificial simulation of salivary and gastrointestinal digestion, and fermentation by human fecal microbiota, of polysaccharides from Dendrobium aphyllum.

In vitro salivary and gastrointestinal (GI) digestion and fermentation of polysaccharides extracted from Dendrobium aphyllum were investigated in this study. Salivary amylase showed no influence on D. aphyllum polysaccharides (DAP). The molecular weight of DAP decreased dramatically during the first 0.5 h of gastric digestion, and then reduced steadily during the subsequent GI tract consumption. The content of reducing sugars increased steadily during GI digestion. Only released free mannose of DAP was detectable by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis during the first 12 h of fermentation, which was contributed by fecal microbiota metabolism. In terms of the fermentation pattern, the pH dropped significantly due to the formation of six types of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). This study demonstrates that polysaccharides extracted from D. aphyllum can be digested by the GI tract and are physiologically active in the human large bowel by lowering the pH of the large intestinal environment and promoting the production of SCFAs.

Short-chain fatty acids as feed supplements for sustainable aquaculture: an updated view

Restriction or ban on antibiotic administration in aquaculture encourages the development of environment-friendly feed additives as immunostimulants. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and their salts are ‘Generally Regarded as Safe’ and are often used as antimicrobials in the livestock feed industry. Formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and their salts are among the most studied SCFAs in aquaculture. These SCFAs affect the host performance as well as physiological response upon three ways: either through effects of the feeds that are being administered, through effects on the gastrointestinal tract of the animal or through direct effects on metabolism. To date, most of the available data are focused on the effects of SCFAs on growth performance and feed utilization. Despite extensive research studies on the effects of the different type of SCFAs and their salts on growth performance and feed utilization, the effects of these feed additives on the health of aquatic organisms have only been receiving attention recently. The results of the studies demonstrated beneficial effects of SCFAs as promising feed additives in aquaculture. The present review article summarizes and discusses the topic of dietary administration of SCFAs and their salts in aquaculture with a closer look at the recent findings regarding the effects of SCFAs on growth performance and health status of fish and shellfish. Furthermore, this review identifies the gaps of existing knowledge regarding the roles of SCFAs in the growth and health status of aquatic animals and suggests research areas that merit further investigations.

Short-Chain Fatty Acids Suppress Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Production of Nitric Oxide and Proinflammatory Cytokines Through Inhibition of NF-κB Pathway in RAW264.7 Cells

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by the colonic bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber contribute a significant proportion of daily energy requirement. Furthermore, these compounds are modulators of macrophage function and potential targets for the development of new drugs. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of three types of SCFAs (sodium acetate (NaAc), sodium propionate (NaP), and sodium butyrate (NaB)) on the production of NO and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and proinflammatory and antiinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin (IL-1, IL-6, and IL-10)) and to observe the effect of NaAc on inhibiting lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced NF-κB activation in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The results show that three types of SCFAs (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) reduced the production of proinflammatory factors, including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and NO, and inhibited the vitality of iNOS. Meanwhile, SCFAs enhanced the production of antiinflammatory cytokine IL-10 in lower concentrations (1-1,200μmol/L). Like NaB, NaAC inhibited LPS-induced NF-κB activation. These results may hold promise on the role that SCFAs have on the prevention and treatment of various inflammatory conditions.

Butyrate Enhances Disease Resistance of Chickens by Inducing Antimicrobial Host Defense Peptide Gene Expression

Host defense peptides (HDPs) constitute a large group of natural broad-spectrum antimicrobials and an important first line of immunity in virtually all forms of life. Specific augmentation of synthesis of endogenous HDPs may represent a promising antibiotic-alternative approach to disease control. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that exogenous administration of butyrate, a major type of short-chain fatty acids derived from bacterial fermentation of undigested dietary fiber, is capable of inducing HDPs and enhancing disease resistance in chickens. We have found that butyrate is a potent inducer of several, but not all, chicken HDPs in HD11 macrophages as well as in primary monocytes, bone marrow cells, and jejuna and cecal explants. In addition, butyrate treatment enhanced the antibacterial activity of chicken monocytes against Salmonella enteritidis, with a minimum impact on inflammatory cytokine production, phagocytosis, and oxidative burst capacities of the cells. Furthermore, feed supplementation with 0.1% butyrate led to a significant increase in HDP gene expression in the intestinal tract of chickens. More importantly, such a feeding strategy resulted in a nearly 10-fold reduction in the bacterial titer in the cecum following experimental infections with S. enteritidis. Collectively, the results indicated that butyrate-induced synthesis of endogenous HDPs is a phylogenetically conserved mechanism of innate host defense shared by mammals and aves, and that dietary supplementation of butyrate has potential for further development as a convenient antibiotic-alternative strategy to enhance host innate immunity and disease resistance.
